6 Things NOT to do if You're Getting Arrested

6 Things NOT to do if You're Getting ArrestedEvery single day there are people who end up in handcuffs because of mistakes both major or minor. In a majority of those cases the individual getting arrested was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. No matter the circumstance of the arrest, whether you believe you're innocent or guilty, it is important to comply with officers' orders. Not doing so could land you in a lot more trouble (or even result in injury or death), than had you gone quietly. Here's six rules to follow if you are being placed under arrest.

1. Don't Run

Perhaps the most dangerous thing you can do if you believe you're about to be arrested is run. Too often than not a foot chase or car chase can result in injury or death to you, an officer or a bystander. Not to mention, once you're caught you'll be facing many more charges.

2. Don't Resist Arrest

Don't fight the officer trying to arrest you, instead, fight your case. Even a simple swat at the officer's hand could result in assault charges.

3. Don't Let Police In Your Home

If the police show up to your home be sure to refuse their entry if they don't have a warrant.

4. Don't Talk

If you're getting arrested you have the right to remain silent, and you should use it. Never speak to a police officer or interrogator without a lawyer present, even if just to say you didn't do anything.

5. Don't Consent to Personal Searches

If an officer simply asks to search you or your vehicle they cannot do so without consent or a warrant. Be sure to proclaim to witnesses that you are not consenting to a search if the officer proceeds.

6. Don't Eye Certain Areas

If you do have something to hide, certainly don't look at the areas in your car, home or elsewhere that you don't want the officers to search.

When getting arrested be sure to follow all officer commands. It's the safest thing you can do. Once behind bars, request a call and contact a bail agent so you can get out of jail so you can find the legal help you need to win your case.
